BARRIE, Ont. – Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is moving forward with plans to replace Barrie’s Bayfield Street bridge and widen the roadway, with initial assessments and public information sessions now scheduled.

The project is planned for 2026, and will involve the replacement of the Bayfield Street Bridge and its on- and off-ramps for Highway 400, in addition to widening Bayfield Street to seven lanes.

WSP Canada has been hired to complete a municipal class environmental assessment for the project. As part of this assessment, modes of travel for motorists, pedestrians, transit users and cyclists will also be considered.

The first phase of these improvements will involve design, property acquisition, utility relocations and construction, and is expected to occur over the next two years. The bridge is being replaced in anticipation of a future initiative to widen Highway 400 to 10 lanes.

Three public information centre meetings will be held for community and local stakeholder input, with the first of these sessions scheduled for March 29, 2024.
