MANITOULIN ISLAND, Ont. – A replacement project for Highway 6’s Little Current Swing Bridge, in the town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands, is moving into its next stages following the completion of the planning, preliminary design, and environmental assessment phase.

The Little Current Swing Bridge is the sole roadway access to Manitoulin Island. At nearly 110 years old, the bridge is approaching the end of its service life.

According to Ontario’s Minister of Northern Development, Greg Rickford, replacement of this bridge will improve travel for residents, businesses, emergency services and tourists, and support economic growth and job creation in local communities.

The next steps of this project include property acquisition, right-of-way designation, and detail design.
