THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The latest phase in the widening of Northern Ontario Highway 11/17 has reached completion.

The project is aimed at increasing transportation and economical infrastructure across communities in Thunder Bay and Nipigon.

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation announced on Aug. 31 that work on widening an 8.6-kilometre stretch of Highway 11/17 between Ouimet and Dorion East Loop has finished. The project cost a total of $74.8 million, with funding provided in equal parts by the provincial and federal governments.

Work on this stretch of road comprised the seventh phase of a larger four-lane widening initiative on 100 kilometres of Highway 11/17 between Thunder Bay and Nipigon. In addition to the new lanes, work on this phase also involved the twinning of overhead railway bridges at Ouimet.
