SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – A report on Sault Ste. Marie’s five-year capital transportation plan revealed that the city plans to apply for funding through Ontario’s Connecting Links program that would go toward a road resurfacing project.

The project would see the surface restoration of a 1.8-kilometre stretch of Great Northern Road, located between Third Line and Wigle Street.

Carl Rumiel, director of engineering for the city, said in a meeting this week that the selection was reached based on pavement condition index scores, which consider factors such as surface conditions, current structure, and drainage properties.

The city hopes that with a successful application, construction on Great Northern Road will occur in 2024. Engineering and field data acquisition services will need to be procured in order to move forward with the application and ensure timely tenders in the new year.

Ontario’s Connecting Links program provides municipalities with funding for up to 90 per cent of eligible project costs to a maximum of $3 million per project, toward the building or maintenance of roads that connect two ends of a provincial highway or with an international or cross-provincial border crossing.

For 2023 Sault Ste. Marie received funding via the Connecting Links program for a resurfacing project on Carmen’s Way, between Queen Street and Second Line.
