CALGARY, Alta. – The five-year construction of the West Calgary Ring Road (WCRR) is on track for completion in 2024, with another major milestone just weeks away.

The final portion of the project involves work along the Stoney Trail highway, with the first phase of this work expected to be completed and reopened to traffic in early October. This section stretches between 16th Avenue N.W. and Bow Trail.

Completion of this phase and the road’s subsequent reopening are ahead of schedule, with Ward 6 Coun. Richard Pootmans welcoming the surprise.

“We’ve already heard a lot of people are very happy about it,” said Pootmans.

The Stoney Trail section marks the final step in the construction of the WCRR, which began in 2019 and has a total estimated cost of over $1 billion. Upon completion, the WCRR will be over 100 kilometres in length and encircle the entirety of Calgary.

The remaining construction on Stoney Trail will extend the highway from Bow Trail southward toward Highway 8, with work on this phase of the project expected to continue into 2024.
