May 29, 2023, WILMOT, ON – Wilmot Township council approved a new 28-hectare gravel pit, to be operated by the Petersburg Sand Company, at a meeting May 29, with a vote of 4-1.

At the same meeting the company offered positive assurances regarding the impact of the pit, located at 1856 Snyder’s Road in East Wilmot.

Sand, stone, and gravel will be the primary materials extracted from the site, with the extraction process set to take place in four phases over a 30-year period. The produced aggregates will be supplied to the provincial government as close-to-market solutions for major infrastructure and housing projects, the company said in a press statement.

A report presented to council found that the pit is not expected to have any impact on water quality or nearby wetlands and will remain 1.5 meters above the water table. A traffic impact study by the Region of Waterloo also concluded that this new project will not cause any negative impacts to traffic or nearby road infrastructure.
