June 2, 2023, MOUNT PEARL, NL – Newfoundland and the Government of Canada are making a joint investment of $15 million each toward improvements and repairs to Route 3 outside of St. John’s and Mount Pearl.

The enhancements will aim to ease traffic and improve safety and urban-rural access through the completion of a north-south highway route near St. John’s and Mount Pearl. The project will involve connecting the end of the Team Gushue Highway to the Pitts Memorial Drive and Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive interchange.

The Government of Canada’s funding for the project comes from the Rural and Northern Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. These improvements join 117 other infrastructure projects across Newfoundland and Labrador that have been funded by this program, with a total federal contribution of $68.6 million and a provincial contribution of nearly $64.8 million.

“The final phase of the Team Gushue Highway is one of the last remaining key components of a regional roadway network envisioned for the northeast Avalon region, which was first identified in a comprehensive regional development plan over 50 years ago,” Premier Andrew Furey said in a media release. “Our government committed to getting this project done, and I am very proud that this commitment has now come to fruition.”
