SUDBURY, Ont. – Ajax’s Road Surface Recycling Ltd. has left a repair project on sections of Sudbury’s Kingsway, Municipal Road 55, following delays from quality assurance testing by the city on the recycled asphalt used by the company.

The City of Sudbury has stated time is needed to ensure the asphalt meets proper specifications, with the testing process involving 100 core samples being taken from sections of the repaired road over the next four weeks. A work stoppage was put in place by the city last week until testing is complete.

Road Surface Recycling is using ‘hot-in-place’ asphalt recycling for the repair process, which involves a blend of old and new asphalt for a process that is quicker and less demanding on material.

Frank Crupi, co-owner of Road Surface Recycling, sees these delays as preventing his company from completing the project on time this year, stating to CBC News that his return is conditional on the removal of some of city staff from the project.

Following their departure from the project, the company is set to begin work on a contract with the province’s Ministry of Transportation in Perth.
