PETERBOROUGH, ON – D.M. Willis Associates, as directed by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, is set to conduct a safety evaluation for the portion of Highway 7 east of Peterborough, in the Otonabee-South Monaghan Township.

The evaluation will look at various measures currently in place across the highway, such as lighting, from Burnham Line east to Lancaster Road before recommending possible further safety enhancements.

The initiative comes after thousands of local residents signed a petition urging the study in response to a number of collisions over the last year. These incidents have proven deadly for those travelling the stretch of highway, including four deaths in a head-on collision Nov. 22 and a pedestrian death a week prior.

Otonabee-South Monaghan Township Mayor Joe Taylor says D.M Willis will be conducting “a very in-depth look at all aspects of the highway” to determine where safety enhancements can be made. No timeline for the study was given.
