EDMONTON, Alta. – Enoch Cree Nation’s transportation network is set to receive a massive upgrade.

The Enoch Cree Nation Arena Road Rebuild Project, a partnership of Enoch Cree Nation, the Yekau Lake Settlement Trust, and the River Cree Development Corporation, will upgrade and realign seven kilometres of road, with pedestrian crossings and trails to also be added along the roadway.

The project is being carried out by Enoch’s band-owned contracting company and will see more than 30 Indigenous employees moving the project forward across the construction, developmental, administrative and finance crews. Completion is expected by the end of the year.

Funding for the project comes through the Canada Infrastructure Bank’s (CIB) Indigenous Community Infrastructure Initiative, which has supplied the band a loan of $15 million. CIB’s goal with this initiative is to fund and lend money to projects that directly benefit Canada’s Indigenous communities.

“Moving forward, these projects will lay the foundation and help look after the next generations to come,” said Cody Thomas, Chief of Enoch Cree Nation. “Expanding and modernizing our current infrastructure has been long overdue, and having a project like this will improve the quality of life for every Nation Member and ensure the safety of Maskekosihk [Enoch Cree Nation].”
