July 10, 2014, Edmonton, Alta. – Mayors in the communities
surrounding Edmonton are continuing a push for a second ring road around
Edmonton despite opposition from that city’s staff.
According to a report in the Edmonton Journal, the proposed
road would form a ring approximately 8km outside of Edmonton’s ring road.
Supporters of the idea say that the Ring Road land should be
planned now, and set aside for that purpose, in the interest of long-term
development. That idea is much like what was done with the Anthony Henday
Parkway, which was planned decades in advance of its actual construction.
However, opponents of the idea say that it allows for
Edmonton’s growth to sprawl in every direction, and is not as good a solution
as other possible transit solutions such as light rail and additional heavy
haul roads.
