October 25, 2013, Calgary, Alta. – The Tsuu T’ina First Nation’s
has voted in favour of a tentative land agreement with the Government of
Alberta, paving the way for the construction of the final piece of the Calgary
Ring Road.

An agreement with the Tsuu T’ina First Nation was critical in
order to complete the Calgary Ring Road. Their land is located southwest of
Calgary at the point where the link of the west and south portions of the Ring
Road needs to be built.

“The ring road will bring tremendous benefits for the safety,
prosperity and success of Calgarians, the Tsuu T’ina people, and all Albertans
because it will so dramatically improve traffic flows in, through and around
Calgary and the surrounding region,” said Alison Redford, premier of Alberta.

The Tsuu T’ina First Nation voted in favour of a deal that will
see them swap reserve land for Crown land and financial compensation in order
to facilitate the construction of southwest portion of Calgary’s ring road.

The agreement will result in the Tsuu T’ina First Nation selling
428.2 hectares (1,058 acres) of its land to the Government of Alberta for:

  • The transfer of 2,030.8
hectares (5,018.1 acres) of Crown land to the Tsuu T’ina Nation
  • $340.7 million ($275
million for the land plus $65.7 million to cover impacts on the reserve)
  • Approval for the Tsuu
T’ina to purchase an additional 129.5 hectares (320 acres) of Crown land from
the Government of Alberta for $1.6 million

A
timeline for the construction of the final link of the Ring Road has not yet
been established as a result of the new agreement.
