Gordie Howe Bridge to showcase Canada’s Indigenous heritage with new sculpture
June 21, 2023 By Rock to Road Staff

WINDSOR, Ont. – Anishinaabe artist Michael Belmore will create a sculpture that celebrates Canada’s Indigenous culture for the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
The project team for the bridge selected Belmore as the successful candidate to create the free-standing sculpture which will stand 2.7 metres tall and will be visible to travellers as they enter and exit the country.
Belmore is in the process of developing the concept for the sculpture, which has involved meetings with representatives from Caldwell First Nation and Walpole Island First Nation to consult on the images and symbols that reflect the history and traditions of Indigenous people in Canada.
Following this development process, the project is expected to be installed on the Canadian Plaza section of the Windsor-Detroit crossing by the end of 2023.
