Common Core and Supervisor training go virtual with OSSGA

Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (OSSGA) has worked with the Ontario Ministry to receive approval for mandatory Certified Surface Mining Common Core and Generic First Line Supervisor training to be delivered on-line.

Surface Mining Common Core Training–1 day:
May 21, 2020 or June 25, 2020

  • $375 member/government rate
  • $475 non-member rate

Mandatory for all who work on a site. This program is intended to train anyone working on a surface mining site. The Occupational Health and Safety Act and Surface Miner Training Standard states that anyone working on a surface mining site must have Surface Mining Common Core Requirements Training.

This program trains attendees to recognize and avoid hazards specific to a surface mining environment. Safe practices such as:

  • 3 Core Modules (U5030, U5031, U5032)
  • Lock Out/Tag Out
  • Safe Operation of Power and Hand Tools

Who should attend

Anyone working on a Surface Mining Site. Documentation: Documentation of attendance will be issued for each participant who has successfully completed the course.To register, click here.

What you need

Training can take place at a workers home or office. Good internet access a must. The Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities has been contacted to discuss virtual training options and they stated it is up to the signing authority for each company to accept the virtual training options, so please ensure your signing authority supports this format. All supporting documents for the training will be sent by email.

Generic First Line Supervisor Training–3 days:
June 22 to 24, 2020

  • $675 member/government rate
  • $775 non-member rate

Mandatory for all supervisors. This program is intended for supervisors directly employed by a Surface Mining Company who supervise workers on the surface of an operation. The training covers all six modules below.

  • U6300 – Follow Safety Program
  • U6301 – Prepare for Emergencies
  • U6302 – Follow Health & Hygiene Procedures/Guidelines
  • U6303 – Practice Effective Communication
  • U6304 – Manage Work Area Activities
  • U6305 – Manage Employees
  • U6306 – Assess, Control and Apply Ventilation Systems in Workplaces

Who should attend

Anyone who directly supervises employees at a surface mining operation or is working towards becoming a supervisor, as well as owners, managers, lead hands and group leaders. Documentation: Documentation of attendance will be issued for each participant who has successfully completed the course.
