April 30, 2020  By ORBA

Mississauga, Ont. – In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ontario Road Builders’ Association is offering a weekly webinar series, COVID-19 & The Road Building Industry. The complimentary series is aimed at providing expertise from health and safety, technology, human resources, legal and financial sectors to assist the industry in traversing through the rapidly changing landscape in the wake of the pandemic.

“Ontario’s road builders are navigating uncharted territory and for many the biggest challenge is knowing how to plan ahead in this era,” said ORBA chief executive officer, Bryan Hocking. “In March, ORBA’s COVID-19 response team opened a survey to our members to find out what are their most pressing concerns and in what areas are they impacted the most. It became clear to us that we needed to offer a webinar series with a wide-range of expertise to help them steer their businesses in this current climate and to have the tools they need to better prepare for the future.”

The first webinar of the series, Occupational Health & Safety – What Inspectors are looking for and how to prepare, will take place on May 1 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. An expert panel will lead a discussion on: health and safety guidelines and available resources related to COVID-19, issues to consider when implementing additional measures related to COVID-19, internal compliance and best practices on meeting all health and safety requirements, business continuity in the COVID-19 era, and keeping focused on the bigger picture of overall health and safety. Featured panelists are Paul Devoe, manager regional operations, Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA); John Savoia, senior manager, health and safety, The Powell Group; John Serafini, manager, health and safety, Dufferin Construction Company; and Cindy Wilkins, senior manager, health, safety and environmental affairs, The Miller Group.

Innovative Solutions in Worksite Safety will be the second webinar, and will take place May 8 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.. From the development of portable, foot pump-operated hand washing stations to long lasting anti-microbial disinfectant, this webinar will discuss innovative solutions and best practices in implemented solutions during this unprecedented time.

“Health and safety of our members, the public and their employees, who are on the ground delivering on the province’s essential public infrastructure is paramount,” said Hocking. “Therefore, we are starting off the first two webinars of the series covering various aspects of health and safety, best practices and solutions. We are in the process of confirming details for the subsequent webinars, which will cover labour and employment law, remote workforce management from a human resource perspective and managing cash flow and government relief.”

ORBA’s COVID-19 & The Road Building Industry Webinar Series will run from May 1, 2020 to June 26, 2020. For full details visit, orba.org.
