MÜLHEIM, Germany – Benninghoven has introduced the first asphalt burner to operate completely on green hydrogen, offering road construction professionals a major step in sustainability.

Asphalt production contributes to the majority of carbon emissions across the roadbuilding industry. Benninghoven’s thermal process solution has already aided its first customer in producing several thousand tonnes of asphalt with virtually no emissions, the company said in a press release.

This new system uses up to four separate burners simultaneously, alongside an intelligent control system for coordinating the hardware and software used in the machine’s asphalt production process. This includes control over feed systems, drying sections and burners. Fuel switching is also performed automatically for minimal temperature fluctuations and resulting emissions.

Power consumption and noise emissions have also been curbed in the design of the machine. Power draw has been reduced by 20 per cent, with further improvements driven by burner control for efficient flame production. The machine also features a five dB reduction in noise emissions.

The burner can be equipped in both new and existing asphalt mixing plants, with retrofit solutions also available for use in plants from other manufacturers.
