WESTLAKE, OH – A new report from the Ohio-based Lake Carriers’ Association shows Canadian shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes are down an average of 26 per cent compared to this time last year, with a total of a little more than 610,000 tonnes of limestone being shipped this month.

The report also observed overall shipping averages for the first half of 2023, with shipments from Ontario quarries shown to be down 21 per cent compared to 2022.

This decrease is also consistent in the United States, though not as dramatically. June shipments from U.S. quarries have decreased an average of about 18 per cent from last year, and first-half annual shipments from Michigan and Ohio quarries are down almost 16 per cent.

Overall, the Lake Carriers’ Association found limestone shipments over the first half of the year to be down an average of about 17 per cent compared to last year, with shipments trending below June’s five-year average by about the same amount.
