April 11, 2017 – Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation has announced the widening of 18 kilometres of Highway 401 from the Credit River in Mississauga, Ont. to Regional Road 25 in Milton, Ont.

“Highway 401 is a critical highway for commuters and commercial traffic traveling throughout Ontario and the United States. The addition of both HOV and general purpose lanes is further proof of the province’s commitment to making improvements that will help us manage congestion and improve mobility in the daily commutes of Ontarians travelling across the region,” said Ontario’s Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca.

The Highway 401 Expansion project includes adding HOV lanes in each direction and widening the existing six-lane configuration to:

– Twelve lanes from the Credit River to Winston Churchill Boulevard;
– Ten lanes from Winston Churchill Boulevard to Highway 407 ETR / Highway 401 interchange;
– Twelve lanes from Highway 407 ETR / Highway 401 interchange to James Snow Parkway; and
– Ten lanes from the James Snow Parkway to Regional Road 25.

“Morning and evening gridlock are the constant companion to western Mississauga motorists,” said Bob Delaney, MPP for Mississauga-Streetsville. “Gridlock is the flip side to Mississauga’s continuing growth and dynamism. The widening and expansion of Highway 401 through northwest Mississauga will remove the bottleneck that slows eastbound morning traffic, and the westbound drive home. Our residents grasp and support the short-term construction inconvenience, noise and dust in return for the long-term ease of access, saving of time, and better use of our 401 traffic artery.”

The province has issued a Request for Qualifications to design, build and finance the Highway 401 expansion project—the first step in getting construction underway. The project is being delivered under Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Financing and Procurement model, which transfers risks associated with design, construction and financing of the project to the private sector.

“Our government is proud to make the necessary transportation improvements across the GTHA, including ‎the Highway 401 expansion project‎ in our region,” said Charles Sousa, MPP for Mississauga South. “These important investments in infrastructure are vital to economic growth while helping our families and daily commuters get home faster and safely.”

The average daily traffic for the Highway 401 in the Peel and Halton Region is approximately 108,000 to 188,000 vehicles per day.

“The provincial government is once again pressing ahead with important investments that build infrastructure, break gridlock and improve the flow of traffic along the 401 highway,” said Mayor of Mississauga Bonnie Crombie. “This project will help students, workers and all people better move throughout Mississauga, Ontario’s third-largest city, and across the GTHA. The 401 highway is an important economic corridor that job creators rely on daily to reach consumers and move goods to Pearson airport, across the U.S. border and to destinations throughout Ontario.”

“The widening of the 401 from the Credit River in Mississauga to Highway 25 in Milton is great news for Halton commuters,” added Indira Naidoo-Harris, MPP for Halton. “This will reduce traffic gridlock and make it easier for commuters to spend more time with their families. Our government is investing in infrastructure to keep people moving and strengthen our economy.”
