More exhibitors, new exhibitors and lots of new products are sure to
make 2011’s National Heavy Equipment Show in Toronto in March one to be
remembered.
New features, products and exhibitors make the 2011 National Heavy Equipment Show the “venue” of choice.
More exhibitors, new exhibitors and lots of new products are sure to make 2011’s National Heavy Equipment Show in Toronto in March one to be remembered.
“In mid-November, we were over 90% sold out,” reveals show manager Mark Cusack. “It’s a first for this show to be that far along so early in the game. At this rate, we may be completely sold out by early January. It’s shaping up to be one of the best shows yet.”

One of the reasons for the excitement is the fact that more exhibitors are coming than in previous years – which is very much due, in Cusack’s mind, to the economic recovery going on right now. “The industry is showing increasing strength when it comes to sales,” he observes. “In recent weeks, several major industry players have announced record sales as companies are replenishing equipment after cutting back during slower times.“
The large number of exhibitors makes the National Heavy Equipment Show “the” venue to which decision-makers and buyers want to come. “All the key players in this industry will have their products there on display,” Cusack says. “Being at the show helps people in the industry make informed decisions about which equipment is best to get their mega-projects done on time and on budget.”
Among the large number of exhibitors will be many new ones strutting their stuff, such as Halifax, N.S.-based Trecan Snowmelters. “We’ve heard a lot about the show and we’re looking forward to participating,” says Terry Dwyer, Trecan’s national sales manager. “We’re looking to do a lot more education and create much more awareness about snowmelters.”
People are generally not aware, says Dwyer, of the fact that they’ve been around for 35 years, and over 500 of their units are being used in Canada and the U.S. Basically, snow is loaded onto the machine and melted. Any garbage is captured and melt water is sent down the storm sewer. “They are very efficient and reliable and save money on snow budgets,” says Dwyer.
New for the winter of 2010/2011, is Trecan’s contract-edition snowmelter, which has a “try before you buy” rental option (rent can be deducted from the purchase price). “They handle 40 to 135 tonnes of snow per hour, and we can put a company logo on them,” Dwyer says. “We also have remote communications on all machines, with which we can monitor location and operations, do diagnostic testing and more.”
Volvo Trucks Canada is also among the show’s keen first-timers. “We think that with the recovery of the economy, now is a great time to see current products and gather information to make an informed decision when replacing existing vehicles with more fuel-efficient models,” says marketing manager Carol Girard.
Volvo Trucks Canada will be showcasing its VHD product, specifically designed for the vocational market. Girard says the flexible design allows for quick body mounting and easy hook-ups with the body builder junction box, which gets the truck on the road quicker. “EPA 10 emissions is still a hot topic,” she adds, “so we'll be addressing Volvo's solution and the savings it offers our customers.”

Another first at the show – and in the Ontario market – is Chinese manufacturer LiuGong’s full line of roadbuilding and earth-moving heavy equipment. “The show is a great forum to let people know we’re in the market and showcase the LiuGong line – visitors will see the equipment’s quality is equal to any produced in North America,” says Glen Keam, the sales and business development manager at distributor Fieldworks Construction Equipment. There will be three or four pieces of equipment there for people to look over. “We want to highlight the fact these machines have components from some of the most recognized and respected parts and OEM manufacturers in the world,” Keam notes. “These are high-quality machines with substantial price savings both at the time of purchase and in the long run for parts and service.”
Yet another first-timer at the show is BMH Systems of Boucherville, Que. BMH has over 31 years in the design and manufacturing of concrete batch plants and will be presenting its new EG-10 low-profile, portable ready-mix concrete plant. The EG-10 is available in a dry batch configuration or as a wet batch plant with the Rollmaster reversing drum mix. “Many wet batch plants can cost upwards of $50,000 to move from one site to another,” says Derek Brown, BMH regional sales manager. Our EG-10 can be set up and running for dry batch operation in half a day with no need for a crane.” With the EG-10 in wet batch configuration, the Rollmaster is mounted on a trailer and can be self-erecting, making it extremely portable and economical.
Also making its show debut is Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment, which will be displaying two new reduced-tail-swing excavators and a new wheel loader. “The new excavators are both designed for use in confined areas, and are particularly suitable for use on roadways where they can operate without concern for blocking adjacent traffic lanes,” says spokesperson Doug Zoerb. The wheel loader is the new 148-horsepower DL220, which is sized to fit the needs of many government agencies, and can haul everything from sand and gravel to snow and storm debris.
Other exhibitors, like Sussex, N.B.-based Torrent Technical Inc., have participated in the show many times, but are very excited to be coming back. “This is a big, big show, and it’s always well done,” states Torrent VP of sales and marketing Jim MacKay. “It brings people up to speed on the technology and gives us a chance to do some education on the importance of matching the attachment to the carrier, which is critical.” Torrent will be proudly presenting its skid-steer mulcher, a brand-new addition to the company’s line of boom-mounted models.
Another new product debuting at the show is the OilQuick, an automatic hydraulic quick coupler for excavators, loaders and rubber-tired backhoes from Mississauga, Ont.-based Creighton Rock Drill. It’s the only hydraulic quick coupler system available on the market that allows hydraulic systems to be changed without leaving the cab, says Creighton general manager Jamie Armstrong. There will be models on display at the booth and also a demo at the Rodeo. “We are absolutely looking forward to the show, as a chance to spend time with customers and to grow as a company,” notes Creighton. “It’s a company-wide participation event for us, so all our sales reps, shippers and receivers will be there. We will also be hosting vendor and customer-appreciation nights, so come on by.”
Rocktrack Inc. of Markham, Ont., will be presenting two new lines – one being the 2011 Rubble Master series of compact crushers. They will also be introducing the Belgian-made Keestrack screening and crushing plants to the Canadian market. "They have been very successful in Europe," explains Rocktrack president Jay Sood.
Prince Edward Island-based Trout River Industries will be launching its new “Shuttle Floor” trailer at the show, the world’s first full-width belt trailer. It has a 76-cubic-yard capacity and can unload in 90 seconds. “We would like to show customers that the Shuttle Floor is virtually maintenance-free and very easy to use for drivers,” says Trout River manager Darrin Mitchell. “However, the most important point that we would like to convey is that Trout River understands that in today’s business climate, owners need to have equipment that can run 24/7 on a variety of jobs that will make them money – and that’s why we made the Shuttle Floor.”
Strongco Corporation of Mississauga, Ont., will be displaying a full lineup of Volvo construction equipment along with products from its other suppliers. “We have recently added Dressta dozers, VT Leeboy commercial pavers and Sennebogen material handlers (in the Atlantic region only) to our distribution,” says Maria Valentini, Strongco’s business development specialist. Strongco will also be displaying and conducting live demonstrations of the Volvo CareTrack system. “This is a telematics system that works with the Volvo machine’s own diagnostic system relaying data back via GPS and satellite,” says Valentini. “Being digitally connected to their machines, our customers can analyze optimum use, service requirements and benefit from theft protection for their fleet.”
In addition to seeing these and lots of other great exhibitors, Marta Blocki, spokesperson for the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (OSSGA), believes people should attend the show for the high level of quality service they have come to expect over the last 14 years. The OSSGA will be highlighting the benefits of membership, “particularly with respect to suppliers to the industry, as well as equipment that promotes health and safety and more environmentally sensitive operations,” says Blocki.
Of special interest to supplier member companies, in Blocki’s view, is a new feature at the 2011 Show – The Gravel Pit – which will showcase the latest in equipment, technologies and service for crushing, screening, processing, recycling and haulage. The Gravel Pit is proudly sponsored by Aggregates & Roadbuilding magazine.
Another popular event at the show – a return from the 2009 edition – is the always-popular Backhoe Rodeo. “Operators will put large equipment through selected timed events in an enclosed area, which requires a steady hand and exact precision,” says Cusack. “It’s a great way to showcase how different brands can perform, and is always a crowd-pleaser.”
