Countries around the world celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) on Sunday, March 8. Rock to Road will continue recognizing great achievements made by Women in Construction for the entire month. The theme for IWD is Each for Equal.
“An equal world is an enabled world,” states the IWD website. “Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions–all day, every day. We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world.”
IWD is about more than celebrating achievements made by women. It’s important to also acknowledge and bring awareness to obstacles that women still face in the construction industry.
Laura Hutt, a site manager in Ontario, said the new generation of workers is big on work-life balance, open dialect, respect for one another, and meaningful work, and she wants to talk about open dialect.
“How can we create an environment in which everyone feels they can talk about things that happen, be open about their career growth, and show what they can do for the company? How do we reach a level within our companies where people feel comfortable bringing forward new ideas, discussing new technological innovations, and having difficult conversations?”
Rock to Road, along with its media partners at Canadian Consulting Engineer, Crane & Hoist Canada, and On-Site will be posting weekly stories, profiles and in-depth articles at www.women-in-construction.com aimed to celebrate the accomplished work of women in the field and create space for conversation on change.
