September 10, 2014, Vancouver, B.C. – British Columbia could
face a shortfall in the number of heavy equipment operators needed in the
province in the next ten years.

According to a report from The Globe and Mail, heavy
equipment operation is one of ten industries that could experience a real
shortfall in workers needed because of a combination of workers retiring and
additional large construction projects expected in the province.

A large part of that need is based on upcoming energy
projects, which includes at least four natural gas pipelines and terminals that
the province wants to bring online by 2020.

The report also cited the most recent census statistics,
from 2006, which showed that just under half of the operators in the province
are between the age of 45 and 64.
