TORONTO, Ont. – Ontario’s minister of labour, Monte McNaughton, has revealed plans to further expand the province’s skilled trades program with a sizeable investment aimed at increasing training accessibility.

Last week, McNaughton announced that $160 million will be invested in these programs. The province will be prioritizing access for those on social assistance and those with criminal records by aiming to provide at least 100,000 applicants who fit these qualifications with free training in the trades.

With this announcement, the total investment of Ontario’s Skills Development Fund into the province’s workforce has risen to more than $860 million, spread across 596 projects in a variety of sectors.

Applications are now open for those seeking this funding through Transfer Payment Ontario, with a deadline of Nov. 17.
