UTRECHT, Netherlands – Mammoet has introduced a zero-emission solution for transport of materials for large-scale construction and infrastructure projects by converting their self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) from diesel to electric power.

The original SPMT was developed by Mammoet in 1984 and allows for the transport of construction materials of up to thousands of tonnes, such as components for bridges and wind turbines, at walking pace using a remote control. For their new sustainable conversion, the company developed a retrofit kit that replaced diesel engines in these vehicles with electric motors.

In addition to the diminished carbon footprint provided by these vehicles, the new electric engines cut down on waste and additional construction by providing contractors with a convertible solution, as opposed to requiring the purchasing of entirely new zero-emission fleets.

This new technology was developed and funded in collaboration with the DKTI, a Dutch government program for developing climate technologies and logistical innovations.
