CHICAGO – Komatsu America has entered into an agreement to acquire American Battery Solutions (ABS), a Detroit-based battery manufacturer, with hopes to integrate ABS’ technology into their own vehicles.

ABS specializes in manufacturing both standard and custom-built heavy-duty, industrial lithium-ion battery packs for on- and off-road vehicles, transit buses and commercial vehicles. The acquisition is expected to close on Dec. 1, according to Komatsu.

Komatsu plans to leverage this partnership toward the development and production of its own battery-powered construction and mining equipment. The first equipment that Komatsu plans to produce with this technology will be used in mining equipment in North and South America, the company said.

Following this acquisition, ABS will operate as a stand-alone business entity under the Komatsu umbrella.
