“In
Ontario, municipalities own and operate more infrastructure than any other
order of government,” said Russ Powers, president of the Association of
Municipalities of Ontario. “Today's announcement will help to ensure municipal
governments can continue to make critical repairs to roads, bridges and water
systems while beginning to plan so we can make appropriate use of future
funding.”

Municipalities can apply
online for a share of $51 million under the strategy to
undertake critical infrastructure projects that strengthen local economies
and create jobs.
Ontario
is also providing up to $9 million to small and northern municipalities to help
prepare their asset management plans, which help municipalities make smart,
long-term planning decisions about building, operating, maintaining, renewing
and replacing infrastructure.

 “Through the Municipal Infrastructure
Strategy, small and Northern Ontario municipalities are enhancing their asset
management capabilities, something that is a critical component of managing a modern
class of infrastructure,” said Alan Korell, president of the Ontario Good Roads
Association.

The
application deadline is Jan. 9, 2013. Applications must show how projects fit
within a comprehensive asset management plan.
