Lafarge Canada’s low carbon cement to support sustainable housing in Indigenous communities

SIKSIKA NATION, Alta. – Lafarge Canada is collaborating with nidus3D, a robotic construction company specializing in 3D-printed housing, to supply low carbon cement to nidus3D’s Kakatoosoyiists housing project for the SikSika indigenous community east of Calgary.

Lafarge’s OneCem low-carbon cement, which uses a higher limestone content during the manufacturing process to reduce greenhouse gasses up to 10 times more when compared to traditional Portland cement, will be used to build 16 units across four buildings designed to support individuals from the local SikSika Nation facing domestic violence or homelessness.

“Our shared goal with nidus3D extends beyond mere innovation,” says Brad Kohl, president and CEO of Lafarge Canada West. “This project is about helping address the critical housing needs of the nation and foster a resilient, inclusive future through sustainable construction practices. We were proud to contribute to this project.”

Construction is currently underway on the project, with an expected completion date of Mar. 31, 2024.
