Jan 5, 2015 – The Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (OSSGA) has awarded the Upper Thames River conservation Authority (UTRCA) a Bronze Plaque Award for the rehabilitation of its Wildwood Pit.
“The Bronze Plaque is reserved for those sites that have become truly outstanding examples of the rehabilitation of pits and quarries in Ontario,” says the OSSGA. It has given this honour to 20 former quarries or gravel pits since the award’s inception in 1975.
Wildwood Pit was a gravel pit in the 1960s. Active rehabilitation efforts began in 1996; it is now home to an ecosystem that sustains turtles, other reptiles and prairie grasses.
