Island will soon benefit from improved safety at a busy intersection on
Route 2 in Woodstock.
July 2, 2010, Prince Edward Island – Residents of western Prince Edward Island will soon benefit from improved safety at a busy intersection on Route 2 in Woodstock. Today, the provincial Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal issued a tender for the construction of the O’Leary roundabout.
“The construction of a roundabout at O’Leary Road and Route 2 will have an immediate, positive impact on safety,” says Minister Ron MacKinley. “After extensive study and evaluation, our engineers concluded that a roundabout would be the best and safest option for the intersection.”
The intersection of Route 2 and the O’Leary Road has been the scene of a number of serious collisions over the years and the Department was challenged with finding a solution that would maintain the efficiency of the highway while reducing the severity of collisions. A roundabout provides that solution by slowing traffic while maintaining the efficiency of the highway.
“This section of Route 2 provides a key link for primary industries in rural West Prince to markets across the Island and to the Confederation Bridge,” said MacKinley. “So it is important that we improve the safety of the intersection without a significant reduction in travel time.”
The province also issued a tender today for the reconstruction of Route 26, the Stratford Road from Barkley Avenue to the Keppoch Road.
