The world’s first permanent electrified road coming to Sweden
May 25, 2023 By Rock to Road Staff
May 9, 2023, BORLÄNGE, Sweden – Sweden revealed plans to turn the E20 Motorway, located between Hallsberg and Örebro, into the first permanent electrified road. The motorway will charge electrified vehicles while driving, allowing drivers to travel longer distances with smaller batteries and to avoid wait times at charging stations.
The project is currently in its procurement stage, with building set to begin by 2025 and charging method yet to be decided. The motorway is part of a larger initiative by the country to have over 3,000km of electric road by 2045, and aligns with legislation passed by the EU last month which requires all new cars sold to have zero CO2 emissions by 2035.
