May 27, 2021 By Rock to Road Staff
Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx have awarded a fixed-price contract of $757.1 million to Strabag to design, build and finance the tunnel for the Scarborough Subway Extension project.
The Strabag team includes:
- Construction team: Strabag Inc.
- Design team: Arup Canada Inc., Brian Isherwood & Associates Ltd.
- Financial advisor: Strabag Inc.
The Scarborough Subway project will include tunnelling works for the 7.8 km expansion, which will run from Kennedy Station to McCowan Rd./Sheppard Ave. Additionally, the project’s scope of work will also include the design and construction of launch and extraction shafts, tunnel, and headwalls for emergency exit buildings and stations. The Strabag team will also supply the tunnel boring machine and will install segmental precast concrete tunnel liners, as well as complete all other necessary activities to build the tunnel including utility relocations, supports for shaft and headwalls, temporary power supply, lighting, ventilation, and drainage.
Onsite mobilization and pre-construction work began this spring, which will be followed by launch shaft construction beginning in June 2021, and major tunnel boring expected to begin in 2022. Strabag estimates the majority of the labour will come from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
