A tool for battling silica dust

The BC Construction Safety Alliance has developed the Silica Control Tool as a resource for the construction industry in B.C.

The tool assists employers in conducting appropriate risk assessments and implementing effective controls and safe work practices where RCS dust may be an occupational hazard. Through the compilation of data relating to RCS dust exposures pertaining to various materials, tools and tasks in construction, the tool can predict the expected exposures to workers under similar conditions. The tool has been available in B.C. since spring 2017; and is being continually updated to keep pace with technological developments. Other jurisdictions around the world have expressed interest in his made-in-B.C. tool. Presenter bio:
Dr. Melanie Gorman Ng
Senior Research Scientist at BCCSA
Dr. Melanie Gorman Ng is a senior research scientist at the BC Construction Safety Alliance. She carries out occupational hygiene research with a particular focus on developing statistical models for estimating exposure to hazardous materials in the workplace.

She developed the database and model that drives the Silica Contol Tool with Dr. Hugh Davies of the UBC School of Population and Public Health. Her previous work includes estimating occupational exposure levels for a U.S. study that investigates the health effects of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and a European Union study of the health and economic burden of occupational carcinogens in the EU.
