Wider lanes coming for Lizard Creek Bridge

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will soon have a safer crossing on Highway 3 as work on a new Lizard Creek Bridge gets underway.

The new bridge will include wider lanes and a separated multi-use pathway.

“Peoples’ safety is my top priority, and including a multi-use path protected by a barrier will make a big difference to everyone who uses this part of the highway,” Claire Trevena, minister of transportation and infrastructure, said. “Replacing the narrow bridge gives us an opportunity to make sure the link works well for everyone – whether they are walking, cycling or driving through the area.”

The Lizard Creek Bridge, located approximately four kilometres west of Fernie, was built in 1953. Along with the wider lanes and pathway, the bridge will include two-metre paved shoulders and resurfacing of the approaches.

Before the existing structure can be removed and replaced, a temporary two-lane crossing will be built to provide a detour during construction.

Work on the $6.2-million Lizard Creek Bridge replacement will begin in the coming weeks. The new structure is expected to be complete and open to traffic in late 2019.
