February 27, 2017 – Cruickshank Construction Ltd. of Kingston, Ont. was awarded a $6.9-million contract to replace the Wales Drive bridge in Ingleside and the Avonmore Road bridge in Long Sault; both in the Cornwall, Ont. area.

Avonmore Road underpass construction is set to start in early April 2017 with the Wales Drive underpass scheduled to begin construction in 2018.

Both projects are expected to be completed in fall 2018.

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation recently stated that both bridges will be fully closed to traffic throughout the demolition and construction phases; that the existing bridges will be demolished in halves using 12-hour overnight closures of Highway 401; and that detour routes following the Highway 401 Emergency Detour Routes (EDRs) will be implemented at these times.

“Highway 401 is a vital link for commuters and commercial traffic traveling throughout Ontario, Quebec, and the United States,” stated Ontario’s Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca. “Replacing the Wales Drive bridge and the Avonmore Road bridge will help keep traffic moving and improve the daily commute in the Cornwall area.”

The average daily traffic for Wales Drive at the project location is 1,365 vehicles per day. The average daily traffic for Avonmore Road at the project location is 1,491 vehicles per day.
