Ontario to spend $29 billion on transportation

passed its 2014 provincial budget, which includes nearly $29 billion in funding
for transportation infrastructure.

passed its 2014 provincial budget, which includes nearly $29 billion in funding
for transportation infrastructure.

The 10-year plan released in the budget includes a $2.5
billion investment for highway rehabilitation and expansion projects in the
2014-15 construction season. That funding includes continued work on major
projects like the expansion of Highway 407 and Highway 417, as well as
continued rehabilitation work on stretches of Highway 401 and 403.

The budget also includes a dedicated $100 million fund for
municipal roads and bridges across the province. Municipalities will have the
opportunity to apply for funding based on community transportation
infrastructure needs.

The province also cites a $1 billion investment for the
development of the Ring of Fire “contingent on matching investment by the
federal government.” The first phase of the Ring of Fire development would have
to involve road construction for access to remote mining sites, providing
business opportunities for road builders across the country.
