Highway 404 expansion announced

December 9, 2016 – The Province of Ontario and the federal government have announced that they are partnering to expand Highway 404.

The project will include widening the existing highway from six to eight lanes and adding an HOV lane in each direction between Highway 407 ETR and Stouffville Rd., for an approximate length of 10.4 kilometres.

The expansion project will also include the construction of a new 171-vehicle carpool lot at Major Mackenzie Dr., rehabilitation of two overpasses at Highway 7, widening of the 16th Ave. overpasses, and replacement of the Rouge River overpasses.

The announcement was made by Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation, who was joined by Jane Philpott, MP for Markham-Stouffville.

“We are pleased to partner with the federal government on this important project that will help reduce travel times and keep goods moving across the GTHA,” said Del Duca. “These types of critical investments help us build good quality infrastructure that will help improve the quality of life for those living in Ontario and provide better opportunities and access for businesses in the region.”

The Government of Ontario is responsible for delivering this project, which is expected to begin in 2017 and be completed in 2021.
