Alberta invests in rural highway maintenance

March 18, 2014, Edmonton, Alta. – Albertans can expect to
see more crews out on the roads as the 2014 provincial budget increases
investment in existing roads and bridges.

March 18, 2014, Edmonton, Alta. – Albertans can expect to
see more crews out on our roads as the 2014 provincial budget increases
investment in existing roads and bridges. 

More than 2,500 kilometres of existing provincial highways
will be rehabilitated as part of the current three-year construction program.
Budget 2014 provides $735 million for highway rehabilitation, an increase of
$284 million from the 2013-16 Capital Plan.

This rehabilitation funding is part of the Redford
government’s $5.1 billion investment into expanding and rehabilitating the
provincial highway network.

“We are listening to Albertans and they have asked us to
invest in strategic and timely rehabilitation that reduces the need for
expensive reconstruction in the future,” says Wayne Drysdale, Alberta Minister
of Transportation. “There are many connector roads throughout Alberta that
provide key social and economic ties and we want to make sure they can stand
the test of time.”

Rehabiltiation priorities are evaluated based on a number of
factors such as safety, traffic counts, project costs, future development,
pavement condition, market access and a variety of other factors.
