Procurement plans proceeding: Winnipeg and Manitoba

MHCA members look for assurance on tenders, awards and project starts

April 7, 2020  By MHCA

The City of Winnipeg and Manitoba Infrastructure continue to assure they plan to continue with the scheduled design and tender advertising, and contract awards in order to allow the construction season to proceed, subject to new COVID-19 safety and health procedures are in place, on-site.

“I have had conversations with governments and I was assured by both that, at present, they are holding to their plans for this year’s highways and street-repair construction schedules,” MHCA president Chris Lorenc said.

“Our recent survey of members and our COR clients sent home the message everyone is concerned about the public procurement plans and, while we know that plans are fluid in this pandemic period, we are staying in touch with Winnipeg and Manitoba to keep our industry up to date on government plans for their programs.”

MHCA’s survey of member concerns indicate that construction tenders are a primary issue.

Other top concerns were:

  • The financial impact on individual companies
  • need for information on government supports to buffer the economic impacts, such as with financial supports for worker wages
  • need for timely information and resources for safely working during pandemic conditions

The MHCA’s COVID-19 tab and WORKSAFELY’s resources are being updated each day to help guide members and provide timely information from governments and for industry supports.
