KINGSTON, Ont. – Following construction complications that have fully closed the LaSalle Causeway’s bascule bridge since April, a $1.7 million demolition contract has been awarded to Priestly Demolition Inc. for the immediate removal of the structure.

On March 30, an element of the bridge was compromised during construction, with all operations ceasing and the bridge remaining fully closed. In response to this prolonged complication, Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) “urgently conducted a limited tendering process for the demolition and removal of the Bascule bridge.”

Work was expected to begin last week, with the channel set to reopen for marine navigation later this month. PSPC is also working with the City of Kingston in preparing a timeline for reinstated vehicle and pedestrian access via a temporary modular bridge solution.

In addition to the demolition and plans for a temporary transport solution, PSPC also stated that preparations are simultaneously underway to begin the preliminary design work for a replacement bridge.
