OHMPA announces Fall Asphalt Seminar

November 11, 2015 – The Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association’s 2015 Fall Asphalt Seminar, taking place at the Universal Eventspace in Vaughan, Ontario on December 2, will feature three keynote speakers that will address the latest developments concerning the use of Vacuum Tower Asphalt Extenders (VTAEs) in asphalt blending, results from ten-year performance history of polymer modified asphalt mixtures, as well as asphalt innovations that promote environmental sustainability and efficiency.

The opening keynote speaker, Dennis Hunt, Senior Vice President of Gencor Industries, Inc. of Orlando, Florida, will present on industry milestones over the years and innovations that have resulted in improved roadway quality and driver mobility. Speaking on VTAE’s, a complex and widely misunderstood product, Al Palmer, Technical Director of Specialty Products for Safety-Kleen Systems in Dallas, Texas, will discuss where VTAE’s come from and how they should be used in asphalt paving. Additionally, Chris Abadie, Materials Engineer Administrator for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will provide insight into the success the state of Louisiana has had over the past 20 years to improve pavement performance by implementing technically feasible testing and specifications as well as the latest mixture performance test specified to compliment gyratory compacted volumetric the mix design procedure.

Other seminar highlights include a presentation from MTO’s Senior Bituminous Engineer; Pamela Marks on discussions between MTO and Industry regarding increasing asphalt cement content in Superpave asphalt mixes. And, OHMPA President, Steve Smith will discuss the latest developments from OHMPA’s Quality of Asphalt Pavement Task Force.

“This year we have embarked on several initiatives to improve the quality of hot mix asphalt on Ontario’s roadways and that is reflected in our program, Strengthening Our Dedication to Excellence in Asphalt Paving – The Road Ahead,” said OHMPA executive director Vince Aurilio. “The seminar will provide attendees with valuable information pertaining to the latest developments in asphalt quality here in Ontario and beyond that is available only at the seminar. Additionally, the seminar brings together the province’s hot mix asphalt producers, asphalt cement suppliers, key industry stakeholders and internationally renowned industry experts all in one room for one day. That lends itself to a fantastic opportunity for attendees to network and to gain a great deal of knowledge.”

Registration for the 2015 Fall Asphalt Seminar is currently underway and the association is encouraging everyone from asphalt producers and contractors, to road owners and consulting engineers, to researchers and academics to make plans to attend.
