January 11, 2016 – A portion of the Trans-Canada highway had to be shut down after a deck of the newly-constructed Nipigon Bridge lifted and split.
According to a CBC News report, the portion of the deck split and lifted almost two feet, causing the highway to be shut down. The Nipigon Bridge provides the only crossing of the Nipigon River in the area, causing a virtual shutdown of cross-country road traffic.
Engineers are scrambling to discover what caused the deck to lift across the entire span of the roadway. Eyewitness reports say a gust of wind came under the bridge at the time of the split.
The bridge represents Ontario’s first cable-stayed bridge, and was officially opened in November of last year.
