Stats Can reports construction employment growth

December 5, 2008 – Data released today by Statistics Canada shows that employment growth in the construction sector exceeded all others goods producing sectors.

According to the Statistics Canada November 2008
Labour Force Survey, seasonally adjusted national construction employment
increased by 7,300 or 0.6 per cent from October 2008 to November 2008 (1.255
million to 1.263 million). Annual data indicates that the number of construction workers increased by 111,300
from November 2007 to November 2008, representing a
9.7 per cent increase.

By comparison, employment in the natural resources
sector grew by 2.8 per cent from November 2007 to November 2008 and utilities grew by 5.5 per cent in the same period. Agriculture saw a
year over year decline of 9.8 per cent while manufacturing posted a 3.4 per cent
decline.
