May 11, 2018 - Low inventories of U.S. homes and higher costs of materials continue to have significant impacts on the housing market. For example, the ongoing increase in softwood lumber costs — partly the result of tariffs on Canadian lumber — is harming affordability. As of the end of April, composite prices for framing lumber were up almost 42% since the start of 2017 and more than 58% above prices at the start of 2016. These price increases have added about $6,000 to the cost of a typical, newly built single-family home.

May 4, 2018 - Construction employment increased by 17,000 jobs in April and by 257,000 jobs over the past year while firms boosted pay to help recruit new workers, according to an analysis of new government data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials noted that the increases in pay appear to be attracting more former construction workers back into the job market, but cautioned that labour conditions remain extremely tight.

April 24, 2018 — Trimble announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately-held Viewpoint from Bain Capital in an all-cash transaction valued at $1.2 billion. Viewpoint is highly complementary to Trimble’s e-Builder business, and will extend Trimble's ability to provide more complete and integrated project, jobsite and business workflows across the construction lifecycle.

April 11, 2018 - Metso has agreed to acquire the mobile crushing and screening plant provider P.J. Jonsson och Söner, based in Sweden. With the acquisition, Metso aims to strengthen the breadth and availability of its product and service offering for the aggregates industry in the Nordics. The company's sales in the fiscal year 2017 were SEK 342 million (EUR 33 million).
