New deal to end weeks-long road construction labourer strike

July 21, 2022  By Ottawa Sun

A deal has been reached that could end a weeks-long strike of road construction labourers in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

The National Capital Road Builders Association said that it had entered a tentative agreement with the Labourers’ International Union of North American (LiUNA) Local 527, which represents labourers working in road and infrastructure construction in the Ottawa area.

The agreement will now go to a vote of union members, who have been on strike since July 4, demanding better wages to deal with surging inflation. In particular, the union said it was asking for a $7 pay hike spread out across three years, the length of its typical bargaining agreement.
