MARKHAM, Ont. – Miller Paving, a Colas company, has become the first asphalt concrete pavement producer in Canada to offer Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its asphalt mixtures.

EPDs are fully-impartial and third-party verified reports on the environmental impacts of products produced at a specific plant. The clear and objective information that EPDs provide can help producers benchmark their materials’ environmental impacts and assist decision-makers in choosing products that align with their sustainability goals.

Key to this initiative was a partnership with WAP Sustainability and the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), who developed the NAPA Emerald Eco-Label tool for creating asphalt mixture EPDs in Canada. Miller Paving’s Whitby Asphalt Plant now has several EPDs published to the NAPA website and expects to add more for its products and mixes this year.

Beyond Miller Paving’s current offerings, Colas Canada stated that they expect more of their subsidiary companies to also offer EPDs for asphalt produced in their facilities heading into the near future.

“Having EPDs for the asphalt we produce is important to us at Colas because it helps improve our processes, the asphalt we produce, and their environmental impact. They also help us keep accurate carbon score and help us meet our carbon reduction goals that are part of our corporate CSR program,” said François Vachon, President of Colas Canada.
