Contractors now have a wider choice of milling equipment than ever before with some recent additions to the market.

The BM 2000/50 and BM 2000/60 cold planer milling machines from BOMAG are designed to remove damaged or deteriorated asphalt surfaces from highways, streets and parking lots. Both units are said to feature high horsepower-per-cutting-tooth ratios, are easily transportable, deliver high production and offer a 2 m cutting width to remove a half lane of road surface in one pass. The planers are powered by fuel-efficient EPA Tier III compliant Deutz water-cooled diesel engines. The BM 2000/50 features a 469-horsepower engine that delivers a horsepower-per-cutting-tooth ratio of 2.8 and maximum working speed of 34.2 metres per minute. The 590-horsepower engine on the BM 2000/60 provides a horsepower-per-cutting-tooth ratio of 3.5 with a maximum working speed of 30 m/min. Both models are capable of milling depths up to 320 mm.

Each machine comes standard with four-track steering, providing added manoeuvrability in commercial applications and other tight job locations. Two working speeds with automatic power regulator optimize travel speed. For optimal consistency while working over changing grades and slopes, the milling depth can be controlled using the INTEL-PLANER automatic depth control system. INTEL-PLANER allows the operator to dial in the appropriate grade, and a microprocessor automatically cuts to the desired depth as it moves along the asphalt surface.

A centrally located operator’s station offers exceptional jobsite visibility while dual grade and slope controls allow simple and safe operation from either side of the machine or from ground level. A front-loading, hydraulically foldable discharge conveyor facilitates transportation to and from the jobsite. The BM 2000/50 and BM 2000/60 feature quick-change cutting teeth and holders for fast maintenance in the field, further simplified by an onboard computer system, complete with graphic LCD readout that monitors and controls machine functions. This system continuously informs the operator of the machine’s working condition and can be used to check the status of scheduled maintenance requirements with the press of a button.

Other standard equipment on the BM 2000/50 includes a large capacity 2,700 l water tank and 800 l fuel tank. The BM 2000/60 has a 3,303 l water tank and fuel tank with a capacity of 1200 l to allow longer periods of operation. A hydraulically folding operator’s station canopy, complete with front and rear windscreens, is optional.

Terex

For milling contractors seeking full-lane capability without investing in a full lane machine, Terex Roadbuilding now offers a 3.8 m full-lane cutter assembly for the Terex PR950 cold planer. The dual purpose PR950 has been designed to serve as both a half and full lane machine.

The PR950 is powered by a 950 hp (708 kW) Tier 2-compliant diesel engine to  the PR950 efficiently mill 3.8 m widths at depths reaching 152.4 mm. The PR950 features the same power band drive system as the half-lane version and two cutter speeds, 99 and 106 rpm, are available to match machine speed to milling conditions. The machine’s cutter can be changed in about 6 to 8 hours. The removal of eight bolts and hydrostatic, electrical and drive line connections is all that is required to drop the cutter housing and, after clutch adapter and ladder adjustments, the machine is ready for operation.

Volvo

volvo

Volvo Construction Equipment has developed a new class of milling machines for the road development industry with the introduction of the Volvo MT2000 and Volvo MW500.

Production of both machines began at the end of 2008 and it is anticipated that both models will be available to the North American market in the second quarter of 2009.

The new Volvo MT2000 is a four-track, front-load, half-lane milling machine powered by a 610-horsepower Tier 3 Cummins engine. The MT2000 offers three distinct engine and drum cutting speeds selectable from the operator’s panel — an industry first. The low-speed selection provides higher torque at a lower engine rpm to power through tough material or deep-cut applications. The high-speed selection is available for maximum travel speed on shallow cutting depths. The standard cutting speed is used to provide maximum horsepower and efficiency at normal cutting depths. The MT2000 can run both 2.0 m and 2.185 m wide drums. In addition, the MT2000 offers a four-track system with innovative features to improve milling performance, independently controlled gathering and discharge conveyors with variable speed adjustment to meet cutting drum capacity, dual operating stations with advanced technology in intuitive operator panels, flexibility to control both sides of machine and front or rear from one grade and slope control panel and industry-leading serviceability with walk-in engine compartment.

The new Volvo MW500 is a four-wheel, rear-loading, utility-class milling machine that offers a standard cutting width of 500 mm. Because of its compact size and manoeuvrability, ideal applications include patching, joints, trenching and close cutting around street and roadway obstructions. The four-wheel MW500 has an extremely tight cutting radius of 200 mm which is comparable to many three-wheel machines on the market. The right-rear support leg and wheel can be swivelled inboard for flush cutting. The MW500 offers all-wheel-drive for optimal traction and features anti-slip control (ASC) as standard. Volvo’s patented Line Manager System works in conjunction with the ASC to allow the operator to maintain a constant speed of operation and direction of travel without being adversely affected by the rotation of the milling drum. The 750 mm diameter drum offers a maximum cutting depth of 210 mm with a standard cutting width of 500 mm. The MW500 also has an optional conveyor package with quick-disconnect conveyor and hydraulically raised rear mouldboard. It also features an adjustable steering wheel column and innovative control panel with automatic precision depth control and advanced diagnostic capabilities.

Wirtgen

wirt

The Wirtgen W 150 is a large but compact milling machine that can optionally be fitted with milling drums of 1.20 m, 1.30 m or 1.50 m working width, letting the W 150 be used for a variety of different applications such as milling large surfaces, removing pavement layers at full depth, or levelling. The W 150 cutting depth is zero to 330 mm and the machine accepts the Level Pro, FCS and Flexible Cutter System Light (FCS L) systems. The W 150 is powered by a 6-cylinder Cummins turbo diesel engine with an output of 350 HP, which complies with exhaust emission standards stipulated by the US EPA (Tier III) and the EU (Stage III a).

The W 150 is equipped with the world’s first four-fold full-floating and height adjustment system as a standard machine feature. The system ensures that the machine aligns parallel to the road pavement automatically both during the milling operation and in transport mode. It also guarantees reliable traction of the W 150’s four crawler track units, enabling the machine to always adapt to ground conditions dynamically, and ensuring permanent ground contact and precise adherence to the selected working depth during the milling operation. The machine’s “wasp waist” – the specially shaped central part of the machine chassis – ensures that the operator has a “perfect” view of the milling edge, enabling him to steer the machine with pin-point precision from the individually adjustable driver’s seat. This free-view concept produces significantly better and more effective milling results without the need for time-consuming manual reworking.

The W 150 has replaced the W 1500 in the Wirtgen Group product range.
