New breaker has retrofit capability

The new BR 2155 hammer is the latest addition to the range of fixed blow energy hydraulic hammers offered by Sandvik Mining and Construction. The hammer has class-leading power-to-weight ratio and productivity levels to handle severe service demolition and rock breaking chores. With a working weight ranging from 1190 to 1220 kg and an impact rate of 490 to 760 blows per minute (BPM), the hammer has been designed for carriers in the 20 to 22-tonne operating weight class. The 118 mm diameter tool delivers optimum wear and an excellent impact and bending resistance. Well-protected hoses prevent it from wear and pinching damage while a highly efficient relief valve provides extra protection to the hammer.

Incorporating the latest in breaker design, the hammer features a slim body, a robust sound-suppressed housing made of wear resistant steel, a replaceable bottom plate and an integrated
lubrication system.

According to the manufacturer, a key advantage of the hammer’s modular design is that it allows customers to choose from a range of options as a "retrofit" to match their application, material and budget. This flexibility enables customers to retrofit the hammer after purchase and ensure that the hammer is always to the latest and most appropriate configuration as application requirements change.

Hammer offers high productivity
The most recent hydraulic breaker from Caterpillar is the H180D S, the largest in the company’s lineup. Designed to deliver superior breaking productivity under challenging operating environments, the piston and tool have been increased 15 per cent over the previous model. The hammer weighs 3900 kg and is matched for carriers in the 36.2 to 67.8-tonne class, such Cat’s 345C and 365C hydraulic excavators. The 12,000 ft lbs class H180D S delivers 400 to 505 blows per minute with its 177mm diameter tool.

Innovative features include the Auto Shut Off (ASO) that turns the hammer off when no material is present beneath it. ASO is said to extend the reliability and durability of the hammer by reducing the high stress levels caused by blank firing. The heavy-duty suspension system significantly reduces shock loads transmitted to the machine during hammer operation to improve operator comfort and increase the service life of critical machine components. Standard sound suppression also improves operator comfort and environmental protection.

The H180D S incorporates larger heavy-duty tie rods to accommodate the increase in performance. Full-length wear plates on all four sides of the inner housing increase the guidance and the stability of the power cell. The wear plate design also enhances durability, and visual wear indicators ease maintenance.

Caterpillar hammer settings are preprogrammed in Cat excavator tool control systems for easy set up. The engine dial position settings, hydraulic oil temperature alarm, oil flow and pressure are fully adjustable in the tool control program. Actual hammer working hours can also be recorded for maintenance purposes.

The hammer housing incorporates a rock claw made of Hardox 400 to minimize abrasive wear and tear. To further reduce maintenance and operating costs, there are no exposed cross bolts and a field replaceable dust seal in the lower bushing prevents debris and dust from entering the power cell. The lower bushing itself is field replaceable without the need for special tools. The bushing can be rotated 90 degrees at the job site to double component life.

John Deere expands line

John Deere has expanded its line of hydraulic hammers to include the new Worksite Pro HH100, the first model designed exclusively for backhoe loaders.

The HH100 delivers 1200 ft lbs of impact energy and features a compact design that makes it easier for operators to see what they are breaking.

According to the manufacturer, the hammer’s slim shape allows entry into narrow places and gives operators the ability to work closer to objects. Its long-stroke piston and low-pressure, nitrogen-charged breaking system is said to deliver consistent power to accomplish the task with minimum recoil. Like other John Deere Worksite Pro hammers, the HH100 also employs a ‘gas assist’ cycle to aid the hydraulics and produce more firing power.

With few seals and only two moving parts, the piston and the main valve, the HH100 can be easily field serviced.

Solid body concept for new hammer
Designed for use on skid steers, backhoes and excavators in the 2000 to 5844 kg weight class, Atlas Copco’s SBC 410 hydraulic breaker features a solid one-piece body that eliminates the need for side bolts while providing strength and reliability. The cast-iron body also allows all integral parts to be housed in the same casting, simplifying maintenance and making the unit lighter than conventional units that house the valve, cylinder, front head and breaker in separate compartments.

Weighing 205 kg and accepting a maximum hydraulic flow of 65 litres/sec at a working pressure of 2175 psi, the SBC 410 delivers an impact rate of up to 1200 blows per minute. The high power-to-weight ratio permits the breaker to be used on a smaller carrier without yielding stability. The unit is described as suitable for roadwork, demolition, stake driving and secondary breaking.

For added durability and reliability, the hammer includes a lubrication port positioned at the top of the break to facilitate use with an automatic lubrication system.

The long-stroke piston design is claimed to ensure optimum energy transfer to the tip of the tool, reducing the amount of recoil directed back to the carrier and operator. The piston design also lends itself to quiet operation in urban areas.

A full-length tool bushing reduces wear components by providing maximum guidance to the tool shank. The compact shape of the breaker also provides the operator with improved visibility of the work area.
