February 7, 2017 – Rock to Road checks out the latest hammers and breakers for aggregate and road building operations.

Caterpillar
The largest hammer of the Cat E Series Hammer line, the H180E has a rugged design and offers features such as automatic shut-off, silencing and vibration buffering. All E Series Hammers are designed to be field serviceable with common hand tools. The H180E matches up with Cat excavators ranging from 40 tons to 80 tons. Mounting brackets are available for Cat quick couplers. The energy class of the H180Es is 12,000 ft.-lb. (16,270 J). E Series Hammers feature a symmetrical housing design, which allows rotating the housing 180 degrees to compensate for wear, effectively extending the life of the housing. The lower portion incorporates rock edges that add protection to the housing and enable quick positioning of boulders. The oil flow and pressure are fully adjustable in the tool control program. Also, actual hammer working hours can be recorded for routine maintenance purposes.

Breaker Technology
The BXR 50 is part of Breaker Technology’s line-up of large size breakers. The BXR series uses recoil sensing technology with operator actuated two-speed control and an oversize piston. This combination maximizes blow energy and bpms under varying rock conditions providing an improved operating efficiency of a conventional breaker. It has an energy class of 5,000 ft. lb., offers a long stroke blow rate of 440 to 640 bpm and a short stroke blow rate of 560 to 810 bpm.

Doosan
Doosan hydraulic breakers are available in impact energy classes from 2,000 to 8,000 ft.-lb. and are designed for use with seven Doosan crawler excavators (DX140LC-5 through the DX350LC-5) and the DX140W-5 wheel excavator. The hydraulic breakers feature an energy recovery system that increases strike power for maximum productivity. The nitrogen-powered hydraulic breakers are equipped with an upper/lower suspension system that isolates the power unit from the housing. Approved Doosan hydraulic breaker tools include the following: moils as general-purpose tools; chisels for mass excavation in quarries; blunts for block splitting; pyramidals (nails) for use with hard materials and reinforced concrete.

JCB
JCB Hammermaster hydraulic breakers combine hydraulic force and recovered energy in the hydraulic system through the use of a highly efficient internal control valve. Energy not absorbed by the rock is reused in the following blow, placing less demand on the carrier. Reused energy requires no additional hydraulic flow from the pump. All JCB Hammermasters are available with either a moil or chisel tool as standard. Heavy-duty housing constructed from high-wear-resistant steel ensures reliability regardless of application.

Shearforce
Shearforce HR Series Hammers are designed for demolition, excavation, quarrying and tunneling applications. The hammers are fully hydraulic with an N2 gas rechargeable accumulator. They are offered in five models to fit 25- to 100-ton carriers with an energy class range of 8,000 to 16,500 ft. lb. They feature an anti-blank firing system for increasing components lifespan; have an auto grease re-filler option; and a rotatable soundproof housing. The hammers can perform between 300 to 400 blows per minute, or 350 to 450 blows per minute, depending on the model.

John Deere
John Deere’s new Hydraulic Hammer attachments (HH20C, HH40C, HH60C and HH80C) for skid steers, compact track loaders (CTLs) and compact excavators are designed to be the fastest in its class, and they are more efficient and easier to maintain than previous models. The Hydraulic Hammers are optimized to work with select John Deere G- and E-Series skid steers and compact track loaders, G-Series compact excavators and most competitive models. Redesigned with a simplified hydraulic-breaker solution to boost productivity, the Hydraulic Hammers provide two to three times more blows per minute (BPM) than previous models. With 30 percent fewer parts, rebuild times are reduced to one hour versus eight hours, and an exclusive tool retention system enables quick installation and removal using only one small screwdriver. Additionally, the Hydraulic Hammers only require grease every two hours of operation and have a 1,000-hour service interval, contributing to lower daily operating and maintenance costs.

Atlas Copco
Atlas Copco’s HB 10000 hydraulic breaker is the most powerful unit in its line of heavy hydraulic breaker attachments. The 10-ton attachment fits 85- to 140-ton carriers and delivers an impact rate of up to 380 blows per minute, making it an ideal solution for breaking oversize, demolishing large concrete structures and excavating. The HB 10000 accepts hydraulic flows of 119 to 140 gallons per minute at operating pressures of 2,320 to 2,610 psi. The breaker’s PowerAdapt system automatically shuts the unit down if it receives excessive oil pressure from the carrier. It also features Atlas Copco’s AutoControl system, which automatically adjusts how hard the breaker hits based on the density of the material being broken.

Volvo CE
The Volvo Plus Series is the newest line of hydraulic breakers for excavators from Volvo Construction Equipment. Plus Series hammers are equipped with a newly-designed Vibration Dampened Tie Rod (VIDAT) system, increasing reliability and extending operating hours from 500 to 1,000. The low-noise hammers have fully-sealed, sound-suppressed housing with no metal-to-metal contact to reduce vibration. New service indicators remove the guesswork from determining when the hammer needs service. Volvo has simplicity in mind, using 30 per cent fewer parts than competitive breakers for faster service and more uptime.
