New From ADM
Asphalt Drum Mixers, Inc. (ADM) promoted the addition of its new warm-mix asphalt system to its MileMaker™ Series asphalt plants at ConExpo. The new system delivers even more versatility to the plants, which the company says are the most fuel-efficient, mix-design flexible and productive plants within the 160 to 425 tons-per-hour range.

Previously producing only hot-mix asphalt designs, the MileMaker now has the capability to introduce water or other chemicals into liquid asphalt entering the plant, thereby appropriately lowering the temperature to warm-mix specifications.

The dual-drum plants use counterflow technology, which operates separate drying and mixing zones to achieve the maximum level of heat transfer and fuel efficiency. This enables the MileMaker to achieve a high production volume and an extremely low cost-per-ton average.

The company also showcased improvements to the design and availability of its control houses. Now featuring heavier-duty tubing construction and high-tempered tinted safety glass, the new control houses are fully insulated for any climate, while maintaining the same reliability and state-of-the-art controls found in previous models.

Astec Exhibit
In addition to having lots of hardware on the floor, Chattanooga, TN-based Astec, Inc. (Astec) exhibited two 1/8th scale models at ConExpo – one of a relocatable hot mix asphalt facility and one of a portable facility.

The company designs, manufactures and markets a complete line of hot-mix asphalt facilities, components and parts as well as soil remediation equipment. Astec also exhibited the new Double Barrel Green system for producing mix at lower temperatures, eliminating smoke and smell, reducing fuel consumption and increasing production.

Big Show from Atlas Copco
Atlas Copco had a huge presence at ConExpo 2011. Teaming up with its other brand – Dynapac, the two companies shared connected space, which provided drill and blast and road construction customers a complete look at compaction and paving equipment, along with new drills for site preparation.

For the quarry crowd, the company’s new rock crushers, rock drills, hydraulic breakers and compressors were popular, with the new Powercrusher line of rock crushers and screeners attracting lots of attention. ConExpo attendees were among the first to see Atlas Copco’s new line of track-mounted mobile crushers and screeners suitable for demolition, quarrying and road construction applications. The Powercrusher range includes four models of jaw crushers, six impact crushers, a cone crusher, and six models of screeners.

Reduced Vibration from BTI
BTI Breaker brought its BXR150 Hydraulic Breaker to ConExpo. The 15,000-ft.-lb. BXR150 has a frequency range of 260 to 425 bpm in long stroke mode (high impact) and 340 to 530 bpm in short stroke mode (high frequency). It features a large cross-section upper and lower shock-absorbing isolators to reduce vibration feedback to the carrier; a front head restraint system to tightly guide the front head within the housing; a 12,000-lb. working weight suited for use on 120,000- to 220,000-lb. carriers; manual frequency control via hydraulic piloted stroke control; and a narrow box housing design.

Deister Offers Uptime with Portable Screen Plants
Deister Machine Co. ‘s portable horizontal vibrating screening plants include design features for extended life and uptime in 6 x 20 and 8 x 20 screening plants. Built for sand and gravel, crushed stone, asphalt recycling or concrete applications, the plants use heavy-duty horizontal triple-shaft vibrating screens on a walking beam tri-axle suspension, with AR400 plate construction or linings on all chutes and hoppers. Uptime features include centralized grease points, access ladders and walkways on both sides and front of the screen, and self-cleaning wing-type tail pulleys. Material handling is via 60-in undersize conveyors below the screen and 30-in motorized head pulley cross conveyors. Options include 42-in screen feed conveyor, four-leg hydraulic leveling package, spring-loaded belt scrapers and more.

Eliminate Settling Ponds
Derrick Equipment Company showcased a number of products at the show, including its DE-7200 VFD Centrifuge. Designed to eliminate settling ponds, the DE-7200 VFD is designed to dewater thicker underflow.

It offers a reduced footprint, less chemical usage, is easy to operate and requires no operator involvement, reduced downtime and maintenance costs, low operating costs per ton, and consistently produces a stackable and conveyable product.

Audit Program Introduced
Flexco introduced its Conveyor Audit Program to attendees at ConExpo. This comprehensive program is designed to help operations evaluate the performance of their conveyor systems, allowing them to proactively address belt conveyor concerns before they lead to costly repairs and unscheduled downtime.
When an operation participates in the Flexco Conveyor Audit Program, a Flexco field specialist will visit the operation and evaluate the entire conveyor system. Flexco says these specialists are knowledgeable experts with strong technical skills and years of hands-on training with conveyor systems and components.

Flexco also announced at the show that all of its belt conveyor cleaners are now available in stainless steel. The Flexco line of stainless steel cleaners can be used in any application, but are ideal for use in aggregate operations and other corrosive environments.

Raptor XL500 Cone Crusher Suited for Canadian Apps
Aggregates & Roadbuilding chatted at length with FLSmidth’s production team about the owner and operator benefits of the new XL500 cone crusher, a model that boasts many new design features that will eventually be rolled out to the full line. The crusher is a 24/7 machine built to handle high work index rock with a long lifespan. It has a higher throw than a conventional cone crusher, allowing for more volumetric capacity for its size. It has also been engineered to get around some of the issues that plague cone crushers of this size category, namely frame cracking. The unit has a lot of crushing force, so that the horsepower is applied to the job at hand. Thanks to an in-house gear and pinion design with spiral bezel, the XL500 can also be tailored to control fine production by slowing down, but without losing the torque required to do the job.  The unit can handle more of the crushing work that would otherwise be handled by tertiary crushers.

Green Machine Brings Consistent Asphalt Foaming
Gencor Industries’ Ultrafoam GX2 has a wide range of new features that allow the “Green Machine” to achieve consistent foaming at varying production rates without the use of a powdered mixing device. This allows the asphalt cement (AC) and water to be introduced at widely different flow rates and pressures, the manufacturer says. The technology uses variable orifices for both the AC and water, alongside a system that keeps the two flows in intimate contact. The bottom line is the ability to mix AC and water in a continuous fashion at various rates, providing good foaming regardless of rates. The Green Machine also generates bubbles of even size, and improves the workability of the mix. The only energy used in the process is provided by the pumping system.

Gencor also introduced the Equinox combustion system for applications requiring extremely low NOx emissions.  The design can significantly reduce or totally eliminate the use of Flue Gas Re-circulation (FGR), by a primary stage pre-mix accumulator and a second stage patented injection system. The result is a more stable combustion flame with little or no effect on the exhaust system of the process.  Gencor says this equates to more productivity with the same exhaust system.

New Orange Machines
Hitachi Construction brought some new gear to the show this year, including the ZX290LC-5 and the ZX870LC-5. These ZX Dash-5 Series machines continue the long-standing Hitachi tradition of being reliable, smooth, fuel-efficient, and quiet. They incorporate customer-driven features sure to provide superior durability and productivity while keeping operating costs low.

The Dash-5s offer a host of features, including improved arm digging force, bucket digging force, lift capacity, swing speed, swing torque, hydraulic flow, engine horsepower, and drawbar pull (varies by model).

The roomier cab has more side-to-side foot room and a larger door with more glass for better visibility to the side, while the new, more comfortable high-back seat is available as a heated, air-suspension version (optional on the ZX250–ZX350, standard on the ZX470 and higher). A new multifunction monitor provides enhanced diagnostic features and integrates the radio and HVAC controls in one place.

Save Time and Fuel with Rototilt
Indexator was on hand at ConExpo to showcase its line up of Rototilt products, which are designed to dig, tilt and rotate in a single movement. This versatile excavator attachment combines side tilt, rotation, and a hydraulic quick coupler all in one package.  It allows a bucket or other attachment to be rotated and tilted at the same time, making it simple to operate around or under obstacles, and for any type of ground contouring. The unique combination of continuous rotation and side tilt lets you approach your job from any angle and in tight work areas. Rototilt is available in a complete range of models for machines from 3 to 30 tonne capacity.

KPI-JCI Urging Industry to be FRAP Ready
The folks at KPI-JCI were on hand promoting several new pieces of equipment to make fractioning reclaimed asphalt easier and more efficient, but in a more general sense were also promoting the use of higher percentages of recycled materials in paving jobs as a major potential bottom line booster. The company was spreading the word about a website dedicated to this topic – www.befrapready.com – where pavers can find information on the advantages of FRAP, use calculators to determine how much money they can save by increasing RAP percentages, follow case studies, and get information on some of the specific equipment available to get the job done right. The company suggests the use of a HCI Impact Crusher from KPI-JCI and Astec high-frequency mobile screens to allow operators to use as much as 50% FRAP mix. The site states annual savings of $2 million for a FRAP Ready operation that processes 300,000 tons of RAP and uses a 27/75 mix of FRAP and virgin asphalt.

LB Performance Targets Off-Highway Jobs
Born from the VT LeeBoy heritage and in collaboration with Volvo Construction Equipment, LB Performance offers a full line of niche paving gear under the Blaw-Knox name geared for off-highway paving professionals, including municipal and private jobs. Handled in Canada through Strongco Equipment, the current product line introduced at ConExpo includes two rubber-tired paver/finishers and three road wideners, all using simple designs that LB managers say are easy to operate and maintain. The RW-80A road widener is powered by an 80 hp Cummins Tier IV diesel engine and features a 7-foot material placement width. Model RW100B, the mid-size unit, features a 10-foot material placement width and is powered by a 110 hp Cummins diesel engine. The largest unit in the family, the RW-195E, is powered by a 190 hp Cummins diesel engine, and features a 12-foot material placement width. Also included in the initial product launch are the PF-150B and PF-161B rubber tired pavers. LB Performance claims they are the most powerful pavers in their size class – the PF-150B and PF-161B feature a 67 hp Kubota liquid cooled diesel engine and a 110 hp Cummins engine, respectively, and offer 15 and 17-foot paving widths.

McLanahan Shows Wear Parts, New Dewatering Screens
The dewatering and screening supplier’s Polymer Division was on hand to show off its polymer screen media and wear parts designed for the aggregates and mineral industries. These include modular and trommel screens customized for your gear and applications, OEM replacements that boast tapered openings to resist plugging. Customized urethane wear parts include classifier shoes and tank parts, beaver tails and side liners, trommel wear parts, sand valves and seats, and cyclone wear parts.

McLanahan Corp. was showing an Ultra Sand Plant that included a dewatering screen designed specifically for the aggregates market alongside a separator for higher yields, production and drier products than out of more conventional gear. The company also showed off its new specialty sand pant for producing varied products to help aggregate suppliers meet niche market needs and diversify revenue streams.

Masaba Canada Shows Gear, Canadian Projects
Aside from talking up a new turnkey quarry project just north of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Masaba’s Canadian staff were at ConExpo to show off the Magnum Telescoping Conveyor. This unique material handling tool includes Masaba’s Track Technology, which eliminates cables and cable maintenance, and a 10-hp self-contained power unit that allows operators to set-up faster and easier, as axle jacks, stinger extension, and landing legs can all be run without electrical hook-up. Magnum’s programmable PLC and encoders inform the operator of the head pulley’s exact position at all times, thus minimizing pile segregation. Options include Easy Shift Axles for quick set up from road transport to running, and hydraulic landing legs for easier truck hook up. Other Masaba Canada products include crushing plants, screening plants, washing plants, truck unloading gear and a range of custom gear.

Perc Tackles Storm Water Issues
Perc infiltration fabric from geotextile supplier Propex is designed to allow improved storm water absorption on sites using pervious concrete, tackling what is a growing issue across Canada and the US. The geo-fabric is an environmentally sound product made from recycled pop bottles that allows a high flow-through rate, yet uses a low pore size to trap soil and reduce storm drain maintenance. Designed with assistance from the National Pervious Concrete Pavement Association, it is available through ready-mix distribution channels in 300 ft2 rolls made for easy delivery, handling and application by even small crews. Phillippi-Hagenbuch (PHIL) reported a huge success while at CONEXPO as they focused on the company’s construction and quarry product line, including the Autogate Tailgate Line of off-highway tailgates, unique Load Ejectors that keep sticky material from building up on the floor of a truck body, patented Water Tank designs, J-Hook Container Handling Systems and other award winning products.

New From Roadtec
Roadtec introduced two brand-new products and a new generation Shuttle Buggy material transfer vehicle at ConExpo. The company also rolled out and demonstrated its remote machine monitoring/diagnostic software.
The new products are the SX-5 mid-size stabilizer/reclaimer and the FM-85 heavy-duty, front-mounted broom.

The new Roadtec SX-5 stabilizer features a 540 horsepower (403 kW) CAT® C15 engine and comes with a 96” (244 cm) wide drum and weighs in at less than 60000 lbs (27200 kg). The new Roadtec FM-85 broom is a heavy-duty piece of machinery featuring an 83 horsepower (61 kW) CAT® 3.4T engine. It weighs in at 6000 lbs (2720 kg).

The new generation E-series Shuttle Buggy material transfer vehicle has enhanced conveyor wear resistance, which will lower contractors’ operating costs. A new adjustable width front hopper allows the E-series to work with trucks of widths commonly used in countries outside the U.S. The dual operator stations of the machine have been enhanced and can now slide sideways past the outer edge of the main frame, which improves visibility.

The machine monitoring/diagnostic software was shown in the booth and visitors were able to see the data provided by the system on a computer screen mounted on a demo kiosk.

Sandvik Screens, Crushers and More
Sandvik Mining and Construction were thrilled with the timing of Conexpo 2011, saying the company recently experienced a dramatic increase in sales throughout North America. This growth has been particularly strong in the product lines that have been developed to cater to North America’s specific requirements, and its unique operating environment. The increasing demand for Sandvik products has been particularly seen in crushers, screens, drill rigs, breakers and associated product lines that deal with infrastructure projects.

In order to highlight the importance of this market to its operations,  Sandvik’s stand at ConExpo included examples from the different product lines, interactive presentations and access to key people within the Sandvik Mining and Construction organization.  Some of the product lines represented, included: mobile crushing and screening, drill rigs, stationary crushers, feeders and screen, rock tools, and tunneling equipment. New Products launched at ConExpo included a new drill, several new screens and a number of new crushers.

Wet Washing Alternative
Sturtevant, Inc. from Hannover, MA brought its Whirlwind air classifier to ConExpo, offering the aggregate industry with an alternative to wet washing minus 200 mesh fines from crushed stone. The Whirlwind air classifier incorporates an internal fan and rejecter blade classification system. Its self-contained design does not require cyclones, valves, dampers, ductwork, external fan or the additional supports required to handle these components.

Superior’s ‘Best and Brightest’
Reflecting its ongoing commitment to research and new product development, Superior Industries displayed its “best and brightest” material handling solutions at ConExpo. Included in the company’s conveying equipment display was its Trailblazer™ Conveyor, a new, first-of-its-kind overland conveying system. The highly mobile 500-foot, fully-belted and assembled groundline conveyor is easily towable from site to site, allowing rapid deployment from the road to working status in as little as an hour.

The company also debuted two new product extensions to its comprehensive conveyor component line. First, the Exterra® SFL Dual Belt Cleaner is a primary and secondary belt cleaner/scraper designed with one mounting point and a common tensioning device for ease of installation and operation. The patent pending unit offers one of the lowest profiles of any secondary cleaner/scraper on the market.

Also launching was company’s CEMA Rated Chevron® Wing Pulley. Available in 10- to 20-inch diameters; and 20- to 63-inch face widths, the patented v-shaped wing pulley deflects fugitive material and extends conveyor belt life. Chevron wing pulleys are also made in mine and super duty constructions.

Telsmith, Inc., an Astec company, introduced the new H3244 Hydra-Jaw at ConExpo.  The largest model to date within the Telsmith Hydra-Jaw Series, the H3244 offers advanced jaw crusher technology that offers lower operating costs, increased uptime and production capacity, streamlined operation and maintenance, and greater safety. Engineered with a true 32-inch (813-mm) gape and a 44-inch (1118-mm) width, the H3244 is designed to accept larger feed in hard rock quarry, and sand and gravel applications; and can be mounted on portable plants or modular fixed structure assemblies.

New from Terex Cedarapids
Terex Cedarapids used ConExpo to promote a number of products, including the new Cedarapids MVP450X Cone Crusher, the Cedarapids JS4552 Jaw Crusher, and the Cedarapids CRC380HLS portable crushing and screening plant.

The MVP450X Cone Crusher boasts numerous features that increase the machine’s productivity and ease of use, including new enhancements such as high speed clearing of jammed material; quick crusher separation capability for faster manganese changes; and easy to operate computer controls – the optional “Guardian” PLC control system optimizes production and is fully automated.

The JS4552 Jaw Crusher features durable construction and an aggressive crushing motion for high productivity, while the CRC380HLS portable crushing and screening plant’s unique design allows the cone crusher to be constantly choke fed, maximizing production capability.

Upcoming Shows
Representatives from Intermat 2012 and Bauma 2013, which will be held in Paris, France and Munich, Germany respectively, were both on hand at ConExpo to showcase their upcoming events. Both shows promise to be international affairs. When Intermat was last held in 2009, one third of the almost 185,000 visits were made by international industry professionals. And of the 1,470 exhibitors, 67% were from overseas.  When Bauma was last held in 2010, they had over 3,000 exhibitors and over 420,000 visitors. The Intermat show will be held from April 16 to April 21, 2012, while Bauma will be from April 15 to April 21, 2013.
