Metso Opens its Doors

Sometimes, waiting for a big trade show just isn’t an option. And so, with several new crushing, screening and conveying machines ready to be launched in North America, Metso decided to open the doors of its Columbia, S.C., plant to show its new products to aggregate producers from throughout the Americas.

The event featured the new crushing and screening product offerings from Metso. Some of the newest products on display included the C120 Jaw Crusher, CT3.2 and CW 3.2 Mobile Conveyors, HP3 Cone Crusher, and the ST2.4 Mobile Screen.

The event involved a tour on the Columbia facility, static displays of the newest crushers, screens and parts offered by Metso, as well as multiple educational sessions. The sessions focus on in-depth information about the new products, the introduction of new parts and service solutions, and discussions on some of the major issues currently affecting the aggregate industry. 

Metso’s newest line of crushing and screening products are designed to meet the demands of the aggregate industry, both here in Canada and around the world.

“When it comes to the features (of the new equipment), it pretty much follows the global trends,” said Pekka Pohjoismãki, president of the crushing and screen division for Metso’s mining and construction division. “The most important trend right now is fuel and energy efficiency. We have new engines, new technology related to that in all of our new machines. We have now proven huge reductions in fuel consumption as compared to earlier models.”

Metso’s newest product offerings offer significant upgrades in fuel efficiency over its previous models, with some, like the LT106, offering up to a 30% reduction in fuel consumption.

“We want to provide equipment with the lowest sustainable cost per ton of produced material.”

Most of Metso’s new product offerings showcased at the company’s Columbia facility were from its expanding fleet of portable units. Portable jaw plants, conveyors and screens were all part of the outdoor display area, which gave attendees the chance to both walk around and get into each machine for a better look at the upgraded equipment. Metso recognizes that the mobile products market has expanded both in Canada and the United States in recent years and, as a result, the company is providing more of the portable machines for the North American marketplace.

“If we look at some of the basic benefits of a mobile fleet, it’s their flexibility. There are not a lot of people investing in new equipment in North America, but they are renting new equipment. These types of (portable) units are perfect for the rental market.”

The new products

C120 – The C120 has a feed opening of 34'' x 47'' (1200 x 870 mm) and an aggressive cavity cross-section that results in a high performance and reduction ratio. The Metso C120’s nominal power is 200 HP (160 kW), with an operating speed 230 rpm, and a closed side setting between 2 3/4'' to 8'' (70 to 200 mm). The operational weight is 57,200 lb. (26,000 kg), excluding options.

CT3.2 and CW3.2 – The self-propelled, tracked CT3.2 conveyor features a hydraulic drive system with variable speed control for regulating feed and maximizing fuel efficiency. The wheeled CW3.2 conveyor has a hydraulic coupled drive that can be operated from the crusher or screen without the need for an external power source.

HP3 – With a combination of a higher stroke, higher pivot point, more crushing force and more power, the HP3 delivers higher crushing efficiency, excellent end product shape and safer, reliable operation. Major enhancements include dual-acting hydraulic tramp release cylinders that enable the HP3 to pass tramp iron without stalling or damaging internal components

LT106 – The LT106 is built around Metso’s proven and enhanced C106 jaw, featuring a 42'' x 28'' (1060 x 700 mm) crushing chamber for high output. A new hydraulic system, coupled with a low-emission CAT C9.3 Tier 4 or C9 Tier 3 engine and high-inertia flywheels, offer fuel efficiency of 4-6 gal. (17-22 L) per hour on average without compromising process flexibility, safety or durability of the hydraulic drive. High-inertia flywheels mean fewer power peaks, so the engine consistently operates at optimum speed, lowering fuel consumption by as much as 25-30%.

ST2.4 Mobile Screen – Metso’s newest mobile screen, Lokotrack ST2.4, combines high screening capacity with low fuel consumption. Lokotrack ST2.4 screen box size is 5' x 12' (3.6 x 1.5 m). It features a 101.9 HP (74.9 kW) Cat C4.4 diesel engine. ST2.4 transport dimensions are: length 46'7'' (14.2 m), height 11'2'' (3.4 m), width 9'10'' (2.9 m) and weight (with belt feeder) 51,800 lb. (23,500 kg.).

All of the products on display at the Metso New Products Expo are now available in both Canada and the United States.
