Could autonomous trucks cost thousands of jobs?

August 5, 2015  By  Andrew Macklin

August 5, 2015 – Advancements in the development of autonomous vehicles could provide a much-needed solution for creating safer roads, but could it also mean the loss of thousands of jobs across the country?

According to a report from The Globe and Mail, companies like Suncor Energy Inc. already have a plan in place to replace its fleet with autonomous vehicles by the end of the decade. But the loss of jobs that will occur if such a plan is enacted is not yet clear.

Truck driving employs more Canadians than most other professions, with around 250,000 working in the sector in this country. Should autonomous truck technology be as close as Suncor Energy estimates that could put a significant dent into Canada’s employment structure.
